In 2016, we gave a \u20ac1.2 million check to the Curie Institute to co-finance MICCHADO research program: \u201cUNPRECEDENTED in oncopediatrics\u201d, thanks to the amazing commitment and generosity of our runners, volunteers and partners of the Children without Cancer race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/imagineformargo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Article-Le-Monde_MICCHADO_montage-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14529\" src=\"https:\/\/imagineformargo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Article-Le-Monde_MICCHADO_montage-01.png\" alt=\"Article Le Monde_MICCHADO_montage-01\" width=\"2083\" height=\"1603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imagineformargo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Article-Le-Monde_MICCHADO_montage-01.png 2083w, https:\/\/imagineformargo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Article-Le-Monde_MICCHADO_montage-01-768x591.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2083px) 100vw, 2083px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Curie Institute \u2013\u00a0An unprecedented study on children\u2019s cancers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each year, in France approximately 2,500 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>If almost 80% of them are cured, one patient out of five is diagnosed with a \u201chigh risk\u201d cancer, with high relapse probabilities and an inclination of cancer cells to adapt to treatments. The improvement of the prognosis is today one of the major stakes of oncopediatrics teams. \u201cIt is essential to better understand how these cancers operate, by analyzing the biological characteristics of cancer cells and by deciphering the interactions between the tumors and the patient\u201d, explains Dr Gudrun Schleiermacher, deputy head of translational research of the SIREDO center* at the Curie Institute. The aim is to create tailor-made treatments (called \u201cprecision treatments\u201d) adapted to the biological and immunological profile. \u201cIf these cancers with bad prognosis are known and that some treatments are efficient upon diagnosis, it is not possible to increase the intensity of these standard treatments, she says. This is why we must create target approaches to increase chances of recovery and fight against resistance of tumors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>New in oncopediatrics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Curie Institute has just started an unprecedented national study called MICCHADO. Supported by the Curie Institute and led in cooperation with Gustave-Roussy and the Center L\u00e9on-B\u00e9rard, it aims at improving understand how tumors develop and progress. \u201cWe are especially focused on the presence of tumoral DNA in the blood. We will try to define links between molecular and immunological characteristics and tumoral aggressiveness.\u201d This study, which will include all children, teenagers and young adults suffering from a high-risk cancer, 600 patients over 3 years, is a world premiere in oncopediatrics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A wonderful support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this initiative, a step in the fight against pediatric cancers might be reached. \u201cThe fight against cancer is still a race against time, highlights Dr Schleiermacher. The more we will understand why the tumor resists treatments, the better we will imagine adapted treatments.\u201d MICCHADO is noteworthy regarding both the methodology and the organization. In addition to the cooperation between three platforms and concerning all centers of the SFCE (French Society to fight against children and teenagers\u2019 cancers and leukemia), many associations give a financial support to the project: Imagine for Margo-Children without cancer, Hubert-Gouin \u2013 Childhood &amp; Cancer, the KiCa Fund hosted by the Roi Baudouin Foundation, and Children, Cancers, Health.
