But her journey is far from ordinary.<\/strong><br data-start=\"165\" data-end=\"168\" \/>Ten years ago, at just 13, she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a bone cancer located at the bottom of her spine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"79\" data-end=\"282\"><div class=\"media--video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HYhHY5zbrYI?si=PYNdCYsZ6LI7jy2A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"284\" data-end=\"333\">A Cancer Diagnosis That Changes a Teenage Life<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"335\" data-end=\"627\">It all began in February, when Jade was in eighth grade. She started to feel pain in her leg. The first doctors she saw thought it was due to sports, muscle soreness, then growth. \u201cIt\u2019s a particular age, between childhood and adolescence, the age when you\u2019re building yourself,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"629\" data-end=\"846\">Several months passed before a kinesiologist discovered a lump in her back. Everything moved very quickly afterward: X-ray, MRI, then a biopsy at Necker Hospital that same afternoon. The diagnosis fell: Ewing sarcoma.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"905\">One Year of Intensive Treatment for a Pediatric Cancer<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"1147\">Jade then began an exhausting one-year journey: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and major surgery around the sacrum.<br data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1022\" \/>\u201cThey told me: \u2018Jade, you have a mean lump, you\u2019re going to need treatments that will make you lose your hair,\u2019\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1455\">At 13, understanding the gravity of the disease wasn\u2019t immediate. \u201cWhy do I have to do something that will make me feel even worse in order to get better?\u201d the young girl wondered. Little by little, seeing her parents\u2019 worry and the impact on her loved ones, Jade realized the seriousness of the situation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1595\">After the treatments, a long and particularly intense rehabilitation period began, especially because of the tumor\u2019s location in her back.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1638\">Cured, but Not Without After-Effects<\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1667\">The Reality of Remission<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1669\" data-end=\"1832\">Today, Jade has been officially cured for a few months, after 10 years of remission. On the oncological level, everything is fine. But the reality is more complex.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1834\" data-end=\"2067\">\u201cYes, I\u2019m cured on paper, but in real life, it\u2019s still so present,\u201d she confides. Jade lives with permanent neurological and motor sequelae in her lower limbs. \u201cMy back hurts every day. I think there isn\u2019t a single day without pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2115\">Life After Cancer: A Little-Known Struggle<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2117\" data-end=\"2361\">Jade\u2019s story shows that remission does not mean going back to life as it was before. \u201cThe aftermath can be just as difficult as the during,\u201d she explains. \u201cJust because you\u2019re cured doesn\u2019t mean everything is fine and we stop talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2570\">Physical after-effects come with a psychological journey as well: accepting that these side effects will remain for life, juggling medical school, a body that still requires attention, and her personal life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2572\" data-end=\"2756\">\u201cIt\u2019s true that today I\u2019m out of all that, but it still feels very present,\u201d Jade says. Yet she remains determined: \u201cIf it hadn\u2019t happened, I know I wouldn\u2019t be the person I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2758\" data-end=\"2811\">From Patient to Future Doctor: An Inspiring Path<\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"2812\" data-end=\"2853\">Turning Her Experience into a Calling<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2855\" data-end=\"3057\">Jade\u2019s decision to study medicine often surprises people. Many former patients feel aversion toward hospitals \u2014 but not her. \u201cThe hospital is where I feel good. It\u2019s a very strange feeling,\u201d she admits.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3059\" data-end=\"3304\">Now in her fifth year of medical school, Jade is preparing to become a resident. \u201cI tell myself that in a few years, I\u2019ll be a resident and I\u2019ll be in their place,\u201d she says, thinking of those who cared for her. \u201cIt\u2019s one of my greatest prides.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3306\" data-end=\"3346\">A Message of Hope for Young Patients<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3348\" data-end=\"3490\">\u201cI\u2019d like my story to help at least one child think: she was sick as a teenager, but at 23 she lives with it and she\u2019s doing well,\u201d says Jade.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3492\" data-end=\"3686\">Her message is clear: \u201cAfter the rain, there is always sunshine.\u201d She wants to show young patients currently in treatment that there is a future, that life can be beautiful despite the sequelae.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3688\" data-end=\"3816\">\u201cI never held myself back because of this,\u201d she says. \u201cYou can do so many things afterward. Life is really beautiful afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3818\" data-end=\"3880\">Why We Must Continue to Support Pediatric Cancer Research<\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"3881\" data-end=\"3930\">Curing Is Not Enough \u2014 We Need to Cure Better<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3932\" data-end=\"4136\">Jade\u2019s story perfectly illustrates why research on pediatric cancers remains vital. Today, although survival rates have improved to around 80%, long-term after-effects remain a reality for many survivors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4138\" data-end=\"4382\">\u201cIf I hadn\u2019t had surgery, maybe I wouldn\u2019t be here today. So in the end, luckily I had it,\u201d Jade acknowledges. \u201cBut research must continue.
