At the start of 2022, following a routine blood test, the hospital contacted Camille to bring her daughter Julia in for further exams. An overwhelming fear gripped this lionhearted mother. Upon arrival at Trousseau Hospital, everything unfolded quickly… another blood test and a bone marrow biopsy confirmed the dreaded diagnosis: Julia, age 3, had leukemia, and the battle began. Childhood cancer is a harsh reality that impacts 2,500 new families every year in France. It’s for the purpose of curing more children and teens more effectively that we mobilize daily and raise funds.
As the year comes to a close, let’s support the thousands of families battling this devastating disease and make the word “cure” part of their future. In this article, discover Camille’s story, Julia’s “lioness mother,” and why it’s urgent to support research on childhood cancer.
A Shattering Diagnosis: Julia’s Leukemia
In 2021, when Julia was only three years old, her mother, Camille, began noticing unusual fatigue and frequent infections. Initially thinking it might be a simple iron deficiency, the truth quickly became apparent when a series of blood tests revealed the feared diagnosis: B-cell leukemia. In just a few hours, Julia’s life and her family’s world turned upside down.
Trousseau Hospital quickly took Julia under its care to begin intensive treatment. The shock of the diagnosis was immense for the family, but one thing was clear: they would fight together.
Incredible Strength to Defeat Leukemia
From the first days after the diagnosis, Julia began a rigorous treatment plan including chemotherapy, steroids, and weeks of hospitalization. The young warrior also had to face one of the most challenging aspects for herself and her family: losing her hair.
“Seeing my three-year-old daughter lose her hair because of the treatments was incredibly difficult,” Camille confides. But despite everything, Julia showed amazing strength, even uplifting her family with her courage. Camille recalls, “From the beginning, the nurses, the caregivers told us, ‘you’ll see, children have incredible resilience.’ And actually, it was she who lifted us up. Because without her strength, without her courage, I don’t think we’d have come through it as we have today.”
After months of fierce struggle, Julia is doing better. She has been able to return to school, play with her friends, and start to live a nearly normal life, though the treatments continue. Doctors remain vigilant, and Julia still needs to take oral chemotherapy until February 2025.
Despite the progress, each day remains a challenge for Julia and her family. Every infection, every cold can have serious consequences due to her immune system, weakened by the treatments.
Pediatric Cancer Research: Funding Hope for All Children
Julia’s story highlights a sad reality. Every year, thousands of children fight this disease. However, funding for pediatric cancer research remains significantly insufficient. This is why supporting research is crucial. Medical advancements largely depend on donations, enabling researchers to develop treatments better suited for children and, most importantly, to save more lives.
Camille always carries a small angel, a gift from her grandmother when Julia was first diagnosed, hoping that soon she will finally hear the word “cure” for real. “We haven’t won yet, but we will,” Camille says, full of hope.
Thanks to your support, let’s make the word “cure” a future reality for all children.
